As part of What On Earth events and exhibitions celebrating the botanical world. Cathedral Square presents an outpouring of new images by internationally acclaimed media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes who created Nine Streams of Boorna Malliji (Tree of Shadow).

The expanded artwork reflects on how settlement has shaped our present; how nature and culture are perceived as things that bend to the will of technology and the forces of capital. The artwork features text and imagery significant to the Whadjuk and non-indigenous histories of the site, as a continually unfolding narrative of reconciliation and resilience, framed by the enduring image of the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadow) in a constant state of historical flux and transformation.

Each day the artwork generates a unique visual sequence constructed from a curated database of hundreds of fragments arranged across nine streams of classification; pre-settlement, settlement, language, songlines, emblems, marriage, protest, ceremony and future.

Visit Cathedral Square from sunset each day in August to see Sohan’s work projected onto the wall above the Jacaranda tree between the David Malcom Justice Centre and Town Hall.

With a unique sequence of new images presented each day, this is a must-see presentation of some of the beautiful work created by Sohan and can only be seen during August in Cathedral Square, with Nine Streams in the Boorna Malliji returning September 1.
